This is a picture of a student of mine being congratulated by the general manager of Lamar Advertising. We did a billboard project that dealt with area, perimeter, scale factor, measurements, and a writing piece. It was a pretty cool experience and I'll be doing it every other year to keep it "fresh" and new! This was from my first year of teaching and we've been on the news every year since. This is the way that education SHOULD be- kids getting recognized and appreciated for the things that they are doing in the classroom.
The above link was a project that we did my second year about the Twin Towers. We got all materials donated by Lowe's and constructed 11 foot scale models of the twin towers out of 2x4's, aluminum foil, and electrical tape. There were about 20 students that stayed after school for a total of 15 days and we made them look AWESOME! The news came in, made it a big deal, we got into the newspaper, and it was great for the students. We tried to get the Towers put into the local art museum but they were... full? It was pretty depressing to take down a month of hard work, measurements, and time, but the kids were great sports about it and we loved doing the project.
